I have decided that it is time to give a run at Vodka. Yesterday I went out and bought the cheapest laundry tub/sink I could find at Lowe's and was able to find a 1.5" valve to attach to the drain of the tub. I have also attached a 3' piece of 3/4" tubing to make it easier to drain the tub into the boiler. In the next run I plan to add some cinder blocks under the legs of the tub to make the transfer process a little easier. Anyways, I also went to Petco and purchased a cheap thermometer, submersible pump and a 300W aquarium heater. The aquarium heater worked out to be perfect because it has a thermostat built right into it that maxes out at 88 degrees F. This is very close to the target of 33 degrees C that John Stone recommends.
For the ingredients I picked them up at costco. Sugar is 50 cents per pound and a 2lbs brick of dry yeast was $4.
After washing everything down with soapy water I have placed 10KG of sugar with 13G of water in the tub, put the pump, heater and thermometer in the tub and immediately sprikled yeast on top. I have covered the tub with a canvas cloth. Fermentation has been a bit slower than I expected but there are still bubbles being formed and things seem to be progressing. I have really struggled with getting the pieces of electronics to stay in place in the tub. Temperature is holding at 33 degrees C.
